These pictures were printed from glass plates loaned to the Historical Commission by Henry and Anna Perkins. The pictures were taken by Charles R. Ransden, merchant and photographer. For more than 25 years he was in the photographic line - a maker and finisher of fine pictures and a dealer in photographic supplies. He conducted a grocery and provision store and a waiting room at the North Central and Elm Streets. He carried a fine line of staples and fancy groceries, confectionary, pastry, bread, tobacco and smokers' articles. In summer he offered popular beverages, ice cream, and tonic - a favorite place for a dainty drink or refreshments while waiting for the electric cars. Children from the West School ran over at recess to spend their pennies.
